Week 1 - Meet Garden 9

'A Surprise'

This garden can be described as structured but informal, however Janine, the owner actually uses the word “chaos” because although the hardscape is structured – the planting is not.

Spread over 1300 sqm, the garden has been divided into “rooms” with each space dedicated to a particular range of planting or theme. The informal but structured nature of the garden, celebrates the organic beauty of nature, allowing for natural shapes, colour, and texture, creating a harmonious yet less structured environment.

Janine has lived at the property for 7 years.  Apart from the section’s retaining walls, structure and some larger trees, the current garden has been developed entirely from her own hard work, research, and imagination.

Janine is passionate about birdlife and her desire is to protect the range of species that gather all year round.  On the day of my visit, we enjoyed watching tuis, fantails, waxeyes, and sparrows feeding on the nectar from the flowering cherry trees - even a kingfisher joined the throng at the top of one tree.  Of particular interest is the gabion (a wire mesh cage) that acts as a “bug hotel”. Filled with manuka timber, pine cones, and stones, the wood and cones gradually rot away and attract all manner of insects and bugs thus making tasty meals for the birdlife that abound.

A small grassland area is a work in progress.  This is the owner’s nod to Piet Oudolf – a Dutch garden designer, nurseryman, and author.  He is a leading figure of the “New Perennial” movement that appreciates plants that continue to bring joy even after their peak flowering period, celebrating the beauty of foliage, seed heads, and structure throughout the seasons.

You will love wandering through Janine’s garden. It offers a sense of tranquillity, and surprise and invites visitors to explore and discover hidden gems around every corner including the large flower borders where roses, hydrangeas, hellebores, and irises provide year-round interest.
