Week 2 - Meet Garden 10

'A Series of Rooms'

Helen and Ken have created a stunning garden in just 2½ years. It’s hard to believe they’ve lived here for such a short time, given how well-planted and inspiring their garden is. Their transformation of a smaller section into a vibrant space is truly impressive.

Previously, Helen and Ken lived on a 2½ acre property on Kaipaki Road, which some of you might remember from past Rotary Garden festivals. Their former garden had a stellar reputation, and they’ve continued that tradition in their new home. Helen mentioned, “We moved to a small garden so we can have it about perfect.” They designed and positioned their new house to enjoy the garden from inside.

Helen describes their garden as a perennial haven, featuring delphiniums, foxglove, lupins, and aquilegia, among many other plants. However, this description doesn’t do justice to the variety and beauty of their garden. There are numerous trees, including 10 maples at just one end of the garden, dogwoods, crab apples, a row of ornamental pears leading to the house, and a rare handkerchief tree (Davidia involucrata), which is expected to flower in a few years.

The garden also boasts a collection of roses and lovely clematis. On the shady side of the house, don’t miss the hosta.

Helen’s efforts to grow trillium are particularly interesting. She is experimenting with adding ice to the soil to simulate colder conditions, as she’s unsure if Cambridge’s climate is cold enough for them.

At the rear of the property, you’ll find impressive raised vegetable gardens. By the time of the festival, Helen hopes to have a tomato house constructed to protect the fruit from birds.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit with Helen. Her enthusiasm for gardening is infectious, and it’s no wonder the results are so remarkable.
