Week 3 - Meet Garden 11

'Blended'

This garden is enchanting and has been inspired by a French industrial theme blended with large well established English trees and Kiwi natives creating a unique and harmonious landscape.  A feature is the large pergola constructed from hardwood sourced from the Oamaru wharf which adds a rustic yet elegant touch.

Originally from Ellerslie, a beautiful old villa had been on the property since 1986.  With the owners’ vision and dream to build a family home on the near 20 acre site, the villa took another journey to Muriwai in 2018.  The modern home built since compliments the immaculate garden and large trees and provides a view of the sweeping lawn and the horse paddocks.

As you enter the property, the French influence is evident with its tree-lined driveway.  Conifers lining the drive were originally all bunched together at the eastern side but these were moved, separated out and planted in bunches creating a stunning and welcoming entrance. To add a soft texture, South Island grasses were planted to fill the gaps between and around the trees and to help weed control.

Everything about this garden represents harmony and order including the pergola covered by white wisteria.  The garden’s symmetry especially around the large swimming pool with dwarf toi tois from the South Island adds to its serene and orderly feel. A peaceful ambiance and seamless interplay with nature enhance this country property.

Many of the mature trees are originals. The inclusion of Kowhai, Californian Pears and flaxes to attract birdlife show a dedication to creating a vibrant and lively environment. Passing through a small garden gate, the large equestrian arena and stables add both practicality and charm.

It is hard to believe that it is only two years (since Covid) that the garden has been planted - the owners’ emphasise that it is young and new and still being established. Further, as amateur gardeners they are fast learning and appreciating the love, care and time it takes to create amazing gardens!

It is obvious that the vision and dedication have truly brought this garden to life, making it a perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality.
