Week 5 - Meet Garden 7

'Design With Something In Mind'

Karen and Brian have called Cambridge home for the past four years, having moved from Auckland where they nurtured a tropical garden. Adjusting to the colder frosts of the Waikato has been a challenge, as Karen humorously noted, “No one had told me how cold the frosts could be in the Waikato.” Despite this, they both have grown to love their new environment.

Karen describes her garden as low-key but very pretty in the spring. This year, however, the frosts have taken a toll, and the garden “needs loving care.”  As a novice gardener, Karen has faced the challenges of transforming their garden head-on, making significant changes to their expansive town property.

One of the first major tasks was removing several trees, including a massive one at the front of the house. They even had to bring in a bobcat to clear a block of agapanthus. These efforts have paved the way for a garden that blends tropical elements into their Waikato garden.

Down one side of the swimming pool, the garden displays a tropical feel with palms, bromeliads, and other tropical plants. The nearby French lavender adds a touch of elegance, its blue hues mirroring the pool’s water.

The garden’s strong features include meticulously maintained Buxus hedges and a variety of hydrangeas. Oak leaf hydrangeas adorn the front fence, while the stunning Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’ offers a magnificent display.

Karen has also cultivated a “picking garden” filled with hydrangeas, port wine magnolia, irises, delphiniums, and cornflowers so she can bring a bit of the garden indoors.

Beside the back of the house, more palms thrive above silver undergrowth and large bromeliads. In the lawn, Karen has planted a white lilac tree.

Other notable trees include a large cherry that provides shade, and a persimmon.

While the garden may currently need some extra care, it will be in great shape for Festival visitors. Karen and Colin’s journey from Auckland to Cambridge, and their efforts to adapt and transform their garden, reflect their passion for creating a beautiful, welcoming space.
